French (MFL)

‘If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.’

1 Corinthians 13:1

Modern Foreign Language - French

Mr Atkinson is the French (MFL) subject leader.

This is what he says about his subject.

French is the modern language that we study at St. Paul’s. French is a wonderful language to learn because it is not just spoken in France but also in many places around the world. As we learn this new language we also find out about a different culture and our knowledge of the world gets bigger too.

France is one of the nearest countries to where we live, so maybe one day you will use your French language skills on a holiday or for work.

Our French Curriculum

The French Curriculum is taught by class teachers in Key Stage 2 using native French speaking prompts to supplement their own teaching.

The French units cover speaking, listening and writing as well as exposing the children to aspects of French life and culture. Children enjoy being given classroom instructions in French and also have access to finger rhymes, songs and French stories to provide different contextual uses for French.

As the children progress through the curriculum they become more confident and are expected to speak and write in more complex sentences.

Most children at school do not go abroad for holidays and so learning a new language and exploring the culture of France provides them with exciting new experiences that widen their horizons.
