Design Technology

‘He has filled them with skill to do every sort of work done by an engraver or by a designer or by an embroiderer in blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen, or by a weaver—by any sort of workman or skilled designer.’

Exodus 35:35

Design Technology

Mrs Parker is the subject leader for Design Technology.

This is what she says about her subject.

Design is all around us in everything we use or make, eat or wear. There are a world of problems and opportunities which need to be solved in creative and clever ways. With the right tools and technology, we can think out side the box and far into the future.

Our Design Technology Curriculum

In Design Technology, with our younger children, we have chosen units that enable our children to apply problem solving and design skills to real life situations.

As our children get older we have tried to select a range of textile projects to showcase the versatility of different material and the importance of sewing skills.  Also many of our technical projects help the children to learn to design for a specific target audience.

Throughout the whole school our cooking and nutrition units promote healthy eating and also introduce vital cooking skills, a life long skill.

How we Teach Design Technology
What a Good Learner in Design Technology Looks Like

When our children leave St Paul's, as a good learner in Design Technology, they will be able to:

  • Have a positive attitude towards design and technology and are curious to learn more and engage in self-exploration.
  • Plan their work and possess control over different design techniques demonstrating flexibility throughout the process.
  • Think critically about their own and others’ work, justifying their choices and reflecting on how to improve whilst demonstrating resilience and a growth mindset.
  • Apply this understanding and these key skills to their own lives.
