MATHS AT ST PAUL’S
At our school, we are committed to helping every child become a confident, fluent and resilient mathematician. Our curriculum is built around the White Rose Maths scheme, which provides a clear, structured progression from Early Years through to Year 6. Lessons focus on developing strong number sense, secure understanding of key concepts, and the ability to apply mathematical skills in a range of real-life situations.
In Key Stage 2, we also use Magma Maths to deepen children’s reasoning and problem‑solving skills. This approach supports pupils in developing flexible mathematical thinking and encourages them to explore different strategies and explain their ideas with clarity.
Magma Maths is an online tool that helps children show exactly how they are working things out, not just the final answer. This means teachers can see your child’s thinking and spot any misunderstandings quickly. It encourages children to explain their ideas and try different strategies. By focusing on the steps rather than rushing to an answer, pupils develop deeper understanding and confidence in problem‑solving. Work can be set at the right level for every child. With thousands of questions at different levels of challenge, teachers can give tasks that stretch pupils or support them when needed.
Together, these approaches ensure that children build firm foundations, enjoy challenge, and develop a positive attitude towards Maths that will support them throughout their education.
To support with calculation and number, we also use Mastering Number in EYFS and KS1. These additional, 10 minute-daily sessions support children to remember and consolidate key number knowledge, such as number bonds.

TIMES TABLES
Pupils start learning their times tables per the national curriculum in KS1. In Year 4, the children will sit the statutory multiplication tables check. This is an assessment of 25 questions that are answered within 6 seconds. It is important that children are competent in their times tables, so that they are ready for Upper Key Stage 2.
Practice tests are available online.
